Legitimate Online Jobs - Do They Exist?

By lewgard

Searching for legitimate online jobs is an exhausting experience. There are so many scams, it's not hard to see why so many people feel real online jobs don't exist.

I will list several proven online and work at home jobs, offered by real companies, but first I want to explain how an individual can be taken in different directions.

The term "online job" can have several meanings, depending on your personal criteria, current employment status, and your desire to either work at home or in an out of home environment. There are jobs that are done online, online business opportunities, and businesses that provide online services. But what are the differences between the three?

A job that is done online, whether as an employee of a legitimate company or as a consultant (aka freelancer) providing an online service, is a job where an individual has negotiated with their employer, or predetermined the fact to their client, to allow the opportunity to do the assigned work online - typically at home. These are truly legitimate work at home jobs. As an employee, the employer takes care of any payroll issues, including employment taxes. As a consultant, you are responsible for self employment tax issues. Many companies who seek individuals to fulfull online jobs do not consider individuals as employees, but rather consultants.

An online business opportunity allows an individual to feel as though they own a business. However, the individual more than likely has paid a start-up, or sign-up fee. Online business opportunities are mostly in the direct sales arena, and - in my opinion - are not worth the money invested. Most of these "opportunities" consist of a company sponsored website where an individual promotes products or services. The hidden truth: many of these "opportunities" expect you to recruit other people into the "opportunity". I don't like online business opportunities; most of them are scams - no real opportunity comes out of the deal, except to those accepting the fees. People are easily lured into the lies of earning a high income.

A business that provides online services is an actual business started by an individual. The business is something in which the individual has a great deal of interest and truly enjoys the work. The individual provides the service online to clients.

For the sake of this article, I am going to concentrate on online jobs and list actual companies who are in need of people who seek legitimate "work from home" jobs. As I come upon more companies who seek online workers, I will add to the below lists. It is worth mentioning that, due to the need of their clients, some companies may require the needs of individuals on a sporadic basis. However, it is my finding that call center, customer service, and general bookkeeping online jobs are the most stable.

LEGITIMATE ONLINE JOBS:

Call Center / Customer Service Jobs

  • Alpine Access Premier provider of customer service solutions using home-based employees. I have been informed there is a $50.00 credit check fee.
  • Brighten Communications A business-to-business telemarketing company specializing in the outsourcing of lead generation. The clients you will be making calls on behalf of represent professional organizations in industries such as finance, brokerage, and high-tech.
  • Customer Loyalty Concepts You will be contacting existing newspaper subscribers selling a variety of services.
  • LiveOps Outsourcing call center solutions using work at home agents. $30.00 fee for credit and background check.
  • West At Home West agents handle client's interaction with their customers, from customer care and live chat to email and incoming sales calls.
  • Working Solutions A long-standing company, Working Solutions.com offers many legitimate - NO FEE - home based opportunities.

Data Entry

Data entry jobs are very hard to come by. As a close alternative to data entry, try applying for a work from home job in the transcription arena.

  • Axion Data Sign up as a home-working independent contractor with this long-standing company. NO CURRENT JOB OPENINGS AT THIS TIME. Check back every once in a while as they may have openings at any time
  • Dion Data Solutions Complete an apilcation, and - if approved - you will be contacted to provide work at home data management services for them. NO FEES TO JOIN.
  • Palm Coast Data Data entry keyers input customer information, such as names and addresses, or revise information already in the database. Work at home on your own personal computer, linked to Palm Coast Data. Currently hiring work at home keyers in Florida and Colorado. NO COST

Bookkeeping

  • A/R Recovery Work at home collecting Accounts Receivable.
  • Balance Your Books Provide A/P, A/R, payroll and general support for clients.
  • Bateman & Co. Seeking "telecommuting" staff accountants. CPA required, with at least 3 years of prior public accounting experience. They will furnish the necessary software.

Transcription Services

  • Absolute Document Services Seeking corporate, medical, and legal transcriptionists to work at home.
  • Accutran Global Legitimate online jobs doing medical, legal, financial, investigation, interviews, and focus group transcription.
  • Tiger Fish Provide transcription services: video, editing and legal transcription.

Virtual Assistant Jobs

  • Team Double Click They offer a wide range of administrative jobs: Virtual Assistants, Real Estate Assistants, Telemarketers...jsut to name a few positions. However, they do not have jobs that are strictly typing or data entry.
  • Troy Research  They currently seek a Survey Production Coordinator to work as an independent contractor.  On occasion, they hire individuals as employees.
  • Executive Assistance (Canada)  They are always seeking people to add to their team of VAs

Wow -- really good list! Thanks! I have a friend who can't work due to medical problems and this is a good place to start looking for opportunities for her.

Great resource! Thanks! Just this week our bank announced that it will start a trial home-based call center operation for employees who want to try it out. I passed on it--I work in a regular call center for the bank, and if I let them into my home I will have to let them in whenever I am scheduled, and also to inspect my home. Forget that. But it does look like it might become a trend.

Thanks for all the legwork--I'm sending this to my daughter who is always looking for this kind of thing.

Great hub!  I worked for West at Home once. It wasn't as great as it sounds.  Most of the time, the best hours were already taken, and if you couldn't work in the middle of the night, when most of those home shopping addicts are sneaking around buying that stuff when their husbands are asleep, you didn't make any money. It's NOT a 9-5 job, and you're paid on a commission basis.  You don't get paid for a call until the money is received, and on some calls, you don't get paid until the refund period is over.  If there is a refund, it's subtracted from your paycheck. You're also required to upsell or try to sell related items to the callers.  Just wanted to let everyone know.

Just wanted to say "thanks for all your kind and useful comments.

Kunle: Great idea ! I will do my best to research non USA companies.

Hollie Hobbie: I am so sorry to read of your bad experience. Please remember, anyone or any company that claims to guarantee you will make a set amount of money should raise a red flag. How can anyone guarantee such a thing ? I hope my list will provide something for you.

dafla: Thanks for the info regarding your experience with West. From what I have recently heard from people who work for them, they do provide fairly stable work at all hours. I, however, have never worked for them.

I did not "approve" the post from BigTicket as I did not like the feel of the site he was promoting. Although I was not able to fully view it (my browser did not "like" it), my general feeling is that it is of a spammy nature - which I don't advocate.

I hope you are able to find something that suits you. Best of luck.

Your right, there are hundreds of scams out there on the Internet. You have a right to be cautious and skeptical and do your diligent research on all of them. But don't let your skepticisim get in the way of finding a good Internet business, because there are some out there.

My best advice from experience, I'm 65 years old and have done my research, so here it is. Stay away from all multi level marketing companies, also known as MLM's. The reason is that you waste your time calling hundreds of people, to sell hundreds of products, ususally for a very small profit on each item. It simply is not good time leverage. About 97% of the people that join, quit within 90 days, lose their investment, and quite often get stuck with inventory. The companies do not care, since they have made the money, ie, you bought their product.

These are companies that want you to push pills, vitamins, lotions, skin care, health/energy drinks, insurance, vacations, discount clubs, etc. Similiar to Amway, Herbalife. You either have a upline or downline, that you share your profits with or some type of matrix system, that shows your going to make a fortune. There are no get rich quick real businesses out there.

For any business you go into it requires the right mind set, persistency and consistency and to never, never, give up on your dream and goals to succeed.

Find a business that has a proprietary product (one that you cannot purchase elsewhere, that has a high profit, been in business for at least 10 years, and has a complete training and support system, coupled with state of the art automated maketing platform, ie, comes with pre printed emails, auto responders, contact base, reminders, websites (so you do not have to purchase or design your own) and finally a market for the products.

And finally, ask for at least 2 personal references of people that are doing the business, that they are trying to get you into, that are earning in excess of $100,000 per year, and call them up.

Continued success with your on line Internet business search.

Hope this helps you.

this is a great list, especially now with the bad economy and budget cuts many unemployed workers will need options and ways to make ends meet, the up side is that the internet makes it possible for anyone to start online offering services and using their experiences to work at freelance type work, from either writing, customer service, or web design.

Also with the rise of so many bidding sites, all types of positions are advertised from telemarketing to data entry, call center and even people who post to social sites for those who are to busy to do it. The sad part is that it takes so much time to sort through all the fake jobs to find the real ones.

Your list of legitimate online employers is exceptional.

Many people looking to create a side income or replace their income end up investing money they don't have in starting their own online businesses. I read that 12 million new websites were added to the web in just the first 6 months of 2008!

Many newbies get suckered into scams--adding to their existing debt.

However, most people haven't got a clue about how to develop a profitable online business. If money is tight, a guaranteed paycheck is their best option.

It is true that working from home for a call center, for example, probably won't replace the income you lost when you were laid off, it is a guaranteed source of income. And like one or two of the other commenters here said, when you start out, you are often stuck with the least popular hours.

If you are looking for a salaried position, remember legitimate jobs don't ask you for money.

Finally a real hub on real ways to make money at home from your computer. Too many people waste so much time trying to find work they can do from home for whatever reason.

Of course it is important that people realize that really high end work is almost non-existant on the web. But with hard work and honest effort you can make anywhere from good pocket money to a acceptable living.

There are some excellent online opportunities for network marketers too. Unlike the jobs you listed, you are working for yourself. Therefore, you do not get paid by the hour. It is commission based like many sales jobs are. The return can be much higher because it is your business.

If you decide to go with network marketing, make sure that your business partners have the knowledge to train you. ALWAYS find a team to work with that WILL train you on effective marketing.

Thank you for all the helpful pointers. There are some really fresh ideas here.

I just started doing some at-home virtual assistant work for http://www.internetGIRLfriday.com . The work is very varied, and the whole thing is very well organized, with tasks carefully defined.

My cousin has a job arranging customers' digital photos onto greeting cards which she prints. It sounds like an ideal at-home job, too.

You can try, but if you are required to pay something in return, this will be another thing. I am working at home too. But I am not paying, my clients are the ones paying me, as mentioned in the paragraph 4.

Lewgard - I was wondering if you actually know someone who has worked for Palm Coast Data? If so are they a Palm Coast resident? I went on their site and it appears to be that one has to reside in that area to be employed. i do live in Florida but no where near Palm Coast.

lorimac 3 years ago

I received an answer from Palm Coast Data and the answer is one does have to live in the Palm Coast vicinity. Just thought I 'd share that.

One other legitimate work at home job is the one I have as an online tutor.  Two weeks ago, I tutored kids in both in Maine and Chicago, Illinois from my home in Florida on both Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.  The company which pays me is located on Madison Ave. in New York, New York.

Of course, there is also mystery shopping that I do now and then as well.  The pay is not much, but I have had some great free meals and several other little perks.  In fact, one company I have been with for two years pays $0.40 a mile for traveling to the financial institution branches I visit plus a set amount for each report I write up on their web site.  To start into the mystery shopping business, I suggest going to the Mystery Shopping Providers Association first at www.mysteryshop.org/index-na.php to find out about it. To take the test to become silver certified requires a payment of $10.00, but that will open the door to many other opportunities. McDonald's shops only pay about $7.00, but the receipt for the food purchase will be reimbursed once the company receives the copy of the receipt and a satisfactory written report so an extra $7.00 for eating there when you promise to eat there is nice if you like Mickey Dee.

Then there is also Elance.com where professionals or any other trained people can bid on many offers to complete for various projects from programming to editing as well as translation for one language to another.  You will have to sign up on their site, but that part is free. Those jobs do not require one to live within the boundaries of the US.  This would be perfect for someone who is bilingual regardless where he or she happens to live currently.

This is a wonderful hub I'm very pleased to have stumbled upon.  But honestly, I didn't use Stumble to get here this time - only on my very first visit. LOL!!

I really appreciate your work and efforts but let me telly ou that all the online jobs are not scam or illegal. For example if you have written this hubpage and you are associated with adsense revenue sharing program of hubpages.com then its quite possible you would like to have more and more visitors on your pages.Either from Google search, forums, blogs or advertisments.

For Google you will have to create backlinks that come from links posted on other websites. For forums either you will have to pst new threads or you will have to reply with your link. For blogs you either you can create your own blog and give link to your hubpages. And so on.

This all are related to SEO. For a single person all these jobs and content writing is going to be a diificult task for this webmasters hire virtual assistants and hence it create a work from home or online jobs.

So it can't be said that jobs from particular websites are legitimate or rest are doubtful. You can also find more information about legitimate work from home programs and home business on http://www.ezinfocenter.in

Good Luck

Why are both Team Double Click and Virtual Office Temps on the list? They're blacklisted sites that don't pay out and are in no way legit.

lewgard profile image

lewgard Hub Author 2 years ago

Thank you, Courtney. I haven't heard of either of these two companies being "blacklisted".

Regarding Team Double Click, I have read of a people not being paid as well as some being paid fine. I don't know the entire story pertaining to those who have not been paid, but I do know their claims were posted on a forum (or multiple forums) that are for the purpose or rants and complaints. The BBB has one complaint from one individual who did not get employment with Them. Her complaint pertained to her request for her personal info. being destroyed (which TDC claimed they did). I am not affiliated in any way this company - If they are a truly terrible company I will remove them from the list. At this point, I still believe they are a legitimate company.

Regarding Virtual Office Temps: It appears they are now defunct...Thank you for bringing this company to my attention.

I do my best to look into the companies I mention, but so many companies are failing these days. Additionally, everyone has the right to complain about an unsatisfactory event with a company. If the bad complaints outweigh the good, I won't list the company. I try to keep an open mind and realize that every situation is different.

I have added a few more companies in the Virtual Assistant section.

Last year I checked out and thoroughly researched the call center jobs that you listed - they were all legitimate and people seemed to be very satisfied. I opted instead to look for an online writing job and another hubber recommended Demand Studios - this has worked out incredibly well for me - in fact it is becoming a major source of my income.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do such a thorough list of legitimate jobs. I bookmarked your other work at home hub because it has the best list!

Yes, many think that Internet jobs are just scams and will just make you work for unworthy payment. This is totally wrong. There are lots of online opportunities that you can have that are legitimate and high paying. These jobs will not be as popular as they are today if they are not worthy of your time and effort.
